Over the past several months numerous Lewis County residents have received telephone calls from scammers impersonating the IRS. These scammers attempt to intimidate the resident into believing they have failed to pay the proper taxes and could be arrested for failing to do so. The scammer then attempts to gain personal information from resident and to get the resident to send money to pay off the supposed tax debt.
Please be advised the IRS would never contact you in this way. Also, these scammers do not come to your home. They are generally scammers located outside the United States using computers to contact you through your phone.
The Sheriff's Office reminds all citizens to never give their personal information over the phone and if necessary you should contact your local police department or Sheriff's Office.
