On June 18, 2018, the Sheriff's Office received a report of a stolen truck from the Beilstein Camper Sales parking lot. The owner of the stolen truck attempted to chase the vehicle on US 61 but was unable to catch the suspect. A member of the Palmyra Police Department located the stolen vehicle at the Wilco gas station in Palmyra.
Upon investigation, Christopher E. Guzman, age 18, of Fort Madison, Iowa was arrested for stealing the Ford F150. The Sheriff's Office also located a stolen 2014 Jeep Compass near Beilstein Camper Sales. The Jeep was stolen out of Donnellson, Iowa. Stolen items from several Canton residents were located in the Jeep. There were also stolen items from the Lee County, Iowa area as well. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate this matter along with the Canton Police Department, the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Fort Madison Police Department. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Palmyra Police Department assisted with this investigation.
Guzman remains lodged in the Lewis County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 cash only bond.
