Sheriff Robert Whitmer

On Monday, May 16, 2016 Sheriff Robert L. Whitmer passed away at the Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, Missouri.  Sheriff Whitmer, along with his wife Chris and his children, served the citizens of Lewis County for many years as a deputy and then as Sheriff from 1981 to 1993.  Sheriff Whitmer will be remembered as the last Sheriff who both lived and worked at the Sheriff's Office.  While I may think I live this life as a Sheriff, Sheriff Whitmer and his family truly lived it.  During his tenure, Sheriff Whitmer was required to live in the Sheriff's residence and also operate the jail, which was located upstairs in the same building.  That level of commitment shows how much he and his family dedicated themselves to the office of Sheriff.

On behalf of everyone at the Sheriff's Office we want to offer our sincere sympathy to Chris and the rest of Bob's family and we want to thank all of them for their service to the citizens of Lewis County.

As a small token of our appreciation, and in remembrance of Sheriff Whitmer and former Sheriff Pearl Hicks, our website will include a picture of both of them working in the 1970's at the Sheriff' Office.
